It depends on your setup
I don't have an Apple TV, but I have other devices hooked up to TVs in two different rooms.
In the living room, we have a surround system, so each set top box is hooked up to the sound system, which is in turn hooked up to the TV. To switch between watching DIRECTV and something else, the remote control for the sound receiver needs to be used. The remote provided by DIRECTV does not support changing input sources on a sound system.
In the family room, there is no sound system, so the boxes are hooked up directly to the TV. The TV input, therefore, is used to switch from one box to the next. In this case, the DIRECTV remote can be used to switch between the two, because DIRECTV's remote can be programmed to change inputs on a TV.
Either way, you do not change channels on the DIRECTV receiver to access Apple TV, since the Apple TV will not be connected to the DIRECTV receiver. You instead have to make the switch on whatever device the two units are connected to, either a TV, an audio receiver, and HDMI switch, or whatever other device you might have. To make a long story short, the way you switch between DIRECTV and Apple TV will depend on your setup, that is, how the devices are wired together.
