Accessibility Comments

AppleVis Editor's Note: the ratings for this app have been amended to reflect the accessibililty improvemetns that were reported in version 3.0.

Original Comments: Works almost ideally since the version 2.2.0. The only still inaccessible parts are the call history and messages but compared to what was there before it's a huge step forward. Really recommended!

VoiceOver Performance

VoiceOver reads all page elements.

Button Labeling

All buttons are clearly labeled.

Usability

The app is fully accessible with VoiceOver and is easy to navigate and use.

Dialing a Phone Number

By jscholes

It should be noted that when dialing a phone number, buttons corresponding to the numbers must be double tapped; you cannot type a number in an actual text field.

I suggest you mail the developers asking for improvements in accessibility. I have already sent mine, and some friends did the same. It is important to show them that we are using the app, and we need the changes. I couldn't figure out how to do this, so, if anyone knows how to know if a contact of my list is using viber, let me know. Thanks!

A warning

Hi all,

I've been advised by a user of this app that by default it spams all the people you follow on Twitter once installed.

I do not use this app, so cannot confirm whether this is the case. However, it would certainly appear to be something to watch out for.

Hello! I'm using it since like over a month. My followers can't complain about any kind of spm in their timelines. People who tweet about usin Viber are doing it using Tweetbutton so it's a button on the website i think.

I contacted the the developers and even sent them a tweet on twitter. they still think I'm talking about voice control on the ipod not voice over and they said no we have not implemented voice control. I did explain what it was and how to enable it but they still have not understood. good luck to all of you who have or will have tried.

Update from developer

One of the developers of this app has just posted the following comment to the VIPhone mailing list:

<Begin Quote>
At this stage, VoiceOver support is not planned in Viber. We will look into it in the future and see whether or not it would be possible to develop this feature.
<End Quote>

So, as they have no plans to make their app accessible, I would encourage users to look elsewhere and support those developers who do care about accessibility and don't regard it is just a 'feature'.

Viber free calls & messages

By Sue.Jo

I have been using this app for a few weeks now and find it excellent. I agree it isn't fully accessible using voice over. I am using version 215 on a Iphone 4S. By just using the list of viber users which in my case is small, I can find the person I want to call or send a message to. They are listed in alphabetical order so I just memorised the short list and the rest is easy.

Work around for viewing contacts and question about ending phone

I'm using version 2.1.5. If you go to the recents tab you'll be able to view more information about a contact. From there you can add them as a favorite. A list pops up and you have to choose which phone number. The buttons aren't labeled again but viber is usually the one on top. When you go to the contacts tab and choose favorites, they will be there and voiceover will read their name. My question is, has anyone figured out how to end a phone call? I'm having a lot of trouble with that.

Ending a call

In reply to Work around for viewing contacts and question about ending phone by Walei

Here's what I have figured out for ending a call. There are a couple of ways, depending on whether you are using a hands free or not. If you are not using a hands free: Double tap the bottom right corner of the screen. There is a "End" button, but if you're not using the hands free, voice over does not read any of the elements on the screen. So, once you're done talking, just try double tapping the bottom right part of the screen and that should end the call. If you are using a hands free: Its a little simpler to end a call when using a hands free as voice over does read the different elements that are on the screen. Hence, you can locate the "End" button by flicking to the right. Again, its towards the bottom right of the screen as it is the last button among the options that are available during an active call. Hope this helps.

Viber

We used Viber at work in Sydney and had to give up using it after a month. Free phone calls, at least in Australia, it's a load of nonsense. Oh, yes, we read about the data charges, we read the fine print, and being an insurance company, I can tell you, we know how to read fine print, and we read the fine print very carefully, but the bosses weren't impressed with the first bill. $20000 for one month. I wouldn't ever use this app again even if it was fully voice over accessible. Zero stars.

Yeah i contacted their support team 2 years ago and I can't remember if I posted my support ticket here but here you go.http://support.viber.com/tickets/27655 I will never use this app again. I'm not normally this negative how ever when after 3 years a lot of us explain clearly what vo is and tech staff don't want to get it it's time to give up and go home regarding that app in my opinion as the staff of viber does not care. Just my thoughts. Tc all.

I Don't Think They Care Either

By Igor K

In reply to Yeah i contacted their by KE7ZUM

I just contacted the developers about the issues VoiceOver has with Viber. I got their response, voice-to-text isn't supported in this version, but they say that might be supported in the future. Last time I checked, VoiceOver has nothing to do with voice-to-text. I'm keeping track of their progress, but I'm considering deactivating my account with them if they don't take us seriously. I'm not sure how the android version works and I'm not able to test that on my Nexus 7. If I get an android phone at the end of my contract, I might give them another try. However, accessibility isn't a feature, it's an enhancement to ensure that everyone has access to the same technology.

Delete Buttons

By Mister Kayne

Most of this app. is accessible using VoiceOver. But when you look at the page where all the history of the conversations is maintained you can hear delete button but can't reach it to delete the conversation. Also accessing the end call button is a guessing game.

Removing logs from Viber

In reply to Delete Buttons by Mister Kayne

Although it's possible to remove logs on Viber, the process is tricky. Often I've accidentally contacted the person instead of performing the appropriate action. Simply double-tap and hold on the name of the individual, then swipe to the left. Your finger still has to be on the screen when doing this. Move to the delete button, and double-tap it. The end button is found at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Good luck

Will be trying it

Thanks for your reply, unfortunately I did not get an email notification to my email id about your reply. I will try out this technique later today. Thanks once again.

A new update for Viber was released today; Version 5.0.0. Was just wondering if anyone has tried it yet. Are there any accessibility concerns/issues to be aware of as far as this update is concerned?

Audio messages and iPhone 6

By Debeli

Hi all,
what are experiences with audio messages and iPhone 6? On my 5s when I double tap on audio message item it plays normally. However a person with iPhone 6 can't play, actually nothing happens. The more interesting thing is that video messages are playing fine for him.

The braille screen input does not show in the VoiceOver rotor inside Viber chats. Does anybody have the same issue?
