Beginners’ Guide to the iPhone: Using Apple’s News App

By AppleVis, 26 September, 2015

Member of the AppleVis Editorial Team

In this podcast, Thomas Domville introduces us to Apple’s News app which is new in iOS 9.

News collects all the stories you want to read, from top news sources, based on topics you’re most interested in — so you no longer need to move from app to app to stay informed.

Explore a huge selection of topics from sources including top news organizations and indie publications. Choose the ones you want to add to your favorites so you can get the news that interests you — like business, technology, fashion, sports, and more.

The more you read, the better News gets at understanding your interests, refining the selection of stories delivered to your screen so they are relevant to you. Easily share articles with others and save them to read offline.

Note that at the time of posting, the News app is only available in the United States. It is anticipated that it will roll-out to more countries over the coming months.

If I double tap on the area that lists the number of new stories I have, I'm taken to the top of the list of stories.

Great job Thomas. I knew most of it but how to add a channel by doing search or going to safari and added that way.

Problem with News App

By Greg Wocher on Saturday, October 10, 2015 - 16:43

Hello,
One thing I am noticing is that the app does not always have the most recent stories on the items I have in my favorites. It also does not seem to show all the stories. Anyone else noticing this?

Regards,
Greg Wocher

Should have listened to the podcast

By Greg Wocher on Saturday, October 10, 2015 - 16:43

Hello,
I am pulling a Homer Simpson right now and smacking my forehead. I should have listened to this really and I mean really good podcast on the News app before posting my last comment. I used that wonderful little gem mentioned at the end to add Applevis to the News app from Safari and I now see all the posts. Thank you for this podcast. The more I use this app the more I am loving it. I like putting topics in my favorites and not just specific channels. I think this is a really good app for discovering new and interesting things to read about. This podcast and one I listened to over at Maccessibility really helped me understand it.

Issue with removing a favorite.

By Matthew C on Saturday, October 10, 2015 - 16:43

Hello all. I added a site to news through Safari. When i go into favorites in news I can't seem to open this one feed with the double tap. It just kind of sits there. Also when i go into edit it does not give me the option to remove this 1 thing from favorites. I tried to remove it by not allowing it to sinc with iCloud. It does get rid of it but when i turn on iCloud sinc again it goes right back in. Any ideas on how I can remove this?

Apple news and iPhone 5.s

By Karen.M on Saturday, October 10, 2015 - 16:43

Hi,
I have an iPhone 5 S and I have updated my software to 9.01 the app does not show on my iPhone. Also, when I updated to 9, I thought I would have to enter the numerical password in a 6 digit format, however, my numerical password is still a 4 number password. Is this how it should be for a 5 S? this just for iPhone 6 users?
