On my ios devices I use facebook messenger to read and send chats. But on the mac this app diesnt exist. Is there a free accessible alternative? I can currently access them through app for facebook but its not easy to navigate and makes no sound when you get a new chat message.

I personaly, when on computer, just use messenger.com. Since it is web app, it keeps my settings regardless of a device I use.
I do use it on PC though, so unfortunately I can't speak of safari and VoiceOver accessibility of this. It definitely does make notification sounds.

Yeah the website rocks. I made a web app using fluid so now FbMessenger.app is in my apps folder.
