hi all, i am now evaluating downcast and overcast, on my iphone 7. when tried downcast 2 years ago i liked it sounds it made to indicate events. which do people find the better of the 2, downast, or overcast and i like streaming podcasts not decissarily downloading them at all times.

iCatcher
Don't overlook iCatcher. It is full featured, does streaming or downloading, has many options for configuring the sounds and types of alerts, and much more. Even better, in my opinion, the developer is active, and very responsive to accessibility and other requests.
Downcast
Both Downcast and Overcast are good. Downcast for me, is the best, because of the layout, and the VoiceOver announcements. The developer is planning to release a couple of bug fixes. Hopefully it will be soon.
smart speed unique to overcast?
hi i relly enjoy the smartspeed in overcast; is this unique to overcast or does icatcher and others have it too?thanks for the info on icatcher
Smart speed
No some others have it too. I know RSS Radio has it for example. My favourite app is still Downcast though.
Overcast
For me its Overcast hands down. The clarity of the voices at a higher rate of speed is remarkable along with the smart speed to skip the silence gap between conversations is miles ahead of the others. Besides the real catch is that this is free. I have used Downcast for many ears and they do indeed have some things that more advanced people may want but in the end. I'm an Overcast diehard.
Downcast & Overcast
I am kind of torned between Downcast and Overcast. I've been and still am a user of Downcast, but have been playing with Overcast as the developper of Downcast has yet fixed that iPhone glitch where when playing a new episode from the Podcast tab occasionally crashes the app. I do like Overcast's simple design but I prefer Downcast's more special functions for more advanced users. For example, in Downcast, you can rename the feed itself, something I am not sure if Overcast can even do. For example, some podcasts tend to have very long titles or add the "(MP3)" at the end. Although I understand why they include this in the title, I would rather not see it. So with Downcast, you can rename the feed to whatever your heart desires. Another behaviour of Downcast, when opening the app, the app doesn't automatically start refreshing, you can manually start the refresh yourself, while in Overcast, as soon as you open the app, it refreshes immediately. Granted you can configure Overcast to only download episodes on wi-fi, I still like the ability to manually begin the refresh myself.
But like I said, I also use Overcast but simply find it seems to lack the advanced settings that Downcast has to offer. Who knows, if the developper of Downcast never updates to fix that crashing bug, then I may one day get fed up and permanently delete Downcast and begin using Overcast exclusively.
I use Pocketcasts myself
I was a big fan of Overcast but the developer spends too much time playing with business models and messing with his UI for absolutely no valid reason. Smartspeed is okay but Ocketcast's feature set actually works unlike Ovecast. I get colons read if a podcast playlist is empty, showing again the Overcast's lack of accessibility awareness.Downcast will be updated very soon and it'll be interesting if I sitch again. To be honest, all these podcast programs are very similar so it depends on what features you need. Overcast is very boring and simple, while Downcast and Pocketcast has very good playlist support.
