Discussion of wireless charging in the new iPhones

I don't know about that, but the issue i have with this is that not only do you have to purchase your phone and case, but you also have to purchase the accessory from apple to wirelessly charge the phone, which its self is about sixty dollars us. if they wanted to do this right, they would have included this accessory with the phone to premote wireless charging.

Well you know that someone will develop an wireless charger that is not that expensiveand regarding case, otterbox will create one that will allow wireless charge.

It's using induction, so only a metal case would cause a problem.
I do wonder what happens if you mistakenly cover the wireless charger with something metal, like set keys on it. It might not be a problem either, but they're talking about restaurants and coffee shops eventually having whole tables that charge devices.

You have to purchase wireless charging matts, or maybe cases? from other companies, at least at first. Apple will probably provide its own later on but this is how it always works. Apple has a new feature and other companies join in the game.

I was surprised to see that the wireless charging tech used is Qi.
This is the exact same spec that has been used in Android devices for several years. It requires a case and pad.
It’d be interesting to know how iPhone X is able to charge 50% within 30 mins, and whether or not that becomes more widely available, like to iPhone 8.
Will this mean that it’ll be possible to use any of the shelf Qi wireless charging pad that are available in restaurants, shops, Amazon, etc.

No idea about a case, but as faras buying the charging pad seperate, I didn't expect APple to provide that free with a phone.
My bf has the S7 Edge and he had to purchase his wireless charging pad seperate from the phone, so I don't expect this to change for Apple or anyone for a while.

It was interesting to find out that Apple has introduced wireless charging for its three upcoming new iPhones: I personally think that's a good development, especially as the good old-fashioned charging cables we currently have can get frayed and even wear out eventually; But, if I understand right, the wireless charger is not provided with the new iphones: I am considering buying an iPhone 8 at some point, but now Imay have to pay out even more just to be able to charge it; I have bought my two iPhones so far from my carrier's shop near where I live in France, and I'll probably do the same when I upgrade again, but if they don't stock the new chargers I'll have to visit another shop just to be able to charge my new iPhone. I just hope that compatible chargers are easily available in France if my carrier doesn't have them among the accessories it sells. I know this may seem a dumb question, but where does the charger get its power from? I assume the charger still has to be plugged into the electricity, even though the iPhone won't have to be any more. Not a problem, of course, I'm just curious, wondering if it's like my bluetooth speaker, which sits on a base to charge, that base being plugged into the electricity.

I do believe that the Lightning port is still present in the new phones, so even if you can't get a charging mat right away, you can still charge your iPhone using the old cable method. I know I will probably not get a mat right away as I have the Belkin Valet stand on my bedside table, so knowing that the Lightning port is still there, I'll just keep plopping it on my Valet and have it charge my iPhone next to my Apple Watch.

I hope so too. I don't know for a fact that the Lightning port is still there or not, but I believe that Jonathan Mosen did mention it on the recent Blindside podcast. I really hope that Apple isn't "courageous" enough to remove the Lightning port. I am not crazy that they took off the headphone jack, I still believe that was a stupid change on their part, but what can you do. If people need the headphone jack, buy an older iPhone. Thankfully, I find myself not using the headphone jack that much. Most of the time during my commute, I use the Aftershokz Trekx Titanium. Would have bought some AirPods but here in Canada, the price is just too high for a pair of wireless headphones.

Hopefully we'll learn more and more in the coming weeks, so that way those of us looking at upgrading, will be able to make a informed decision.

Hello, according to MacWorld, the Lightning port is still present on the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus models, no mention though if it is still present in the iPhone X though. They say...

So there is the answer. For those interested in perhaps upgrading to the iPhone 8 or 8 Plus, the Lightning port is still there and can be used in the same way as before.

The keynote said Apple chose 2i for wireless charging since they are pusing for a standard. This is great so there will be a standard wireless charging protocol. I think the difference will be how the device will handle the input, thus some devices will charge faster than others.

For the person that asked, you will still need to plug in the magnet or pad. Then you put your device on it. Look at the Apple watch.

I think this is a great way forward. You purchase the mat, then place your iphone, watch and airpods on it and they will all charge at the same time. I suspect the iPads and Macbooks will follow along too. The only downside is you will have to purchase new devices.

Qi has been the leading wireless charging tech standard for a while, which is what Android and other device use for their wireless charging.
I’m still interested to know what Apple did to make it charge so rapidly.

It's unfortunate that the AirPower won't be released until 2018, which could mean as early as Jan or as late as Dec.

I did a product search for Qi wireless charging station where some mentioned it'll work with iPhone 8 and X. Some mention fast charging and LED lights, where former doesn't work with iPhone 8 and latter isn't accessible to us who are blind.

I'm wondering if there is a Qi wireless charging station that makes a sound like AirCharge when charge/discharge.

Any good and accessible recommendation of Qi wireless charging station?

One of the wireless charging stations promoted by Apple on their website outlines that it will work with some cases, up to 3mm thick.

Also, my guess is that you will still be able to tell if the charge activates when you put the phone down, led light or not. I mean, I expect the iPhone to still vibrate once or twice when it connects to power.

hi guys, a few points here. yes, of course you can still charge the devices through lightning, why would they sell you a phone with no way to charge it. if wireless was the only way to charge it, they would be providing the pads with the phones. lol. secondly, a point of interest. wireless charging, is, as always, slower than a direct connection. so if you want fast charging, you'll still want to plug it in directly to a cable. if you are ok with slower charging, and handle your phone in such a way that slower charging is fine, IE pick it up, use it for some time, and drop it back on to the pad, and let it charge up a bit while you're doing something else, then wireless is fine. but if you have just gotten home, and your phone has 10% power left, ... you're probably going to want to plug it in and really power it up, at least to about 60 or 70%, so as you can use the thing at home, and then you can top it up with wireless for the rest of the time.
as for cases, yeah i'm guessing that as long as the case isn't metallic, and as long as it's not too thick, it should be ok.
Note, you can actually buy cases for your older phones to provide the same exact abilities. so if you want wireless, but aren't that interested in bothering with paying out the huge amounts of money for a new device at this point, and want to hang on to your older phone for a while, you can go grab a case for it, and a pad, and do exactly the same thing.
for example, the mophie juice pack wireless Battery Case for iPhone 6/6s. this adds not only wireless charging to your iPhone 6, but a battery as well. extra battery life as well as wireless. seems damned good to me. ... *now where's my credit card ...*
of course it's better on the new phones, as it's built right in, so not requiring a case. but let's be honest, most of us put cases on our devices anyways.
anyway, there you go. thought i'd just throw this out there.

I have my battery case from apple which I used for my iPhone 7. I recently updated to iPhone 8. I do have a Belkin wireless charger shaped like a puck. Can I still use the new phone in the iPhone 7 case on this new charger or would I have to charge via lightning cable if I used the case.

I seriously doubt that it would work, as there would be too much bulk between the charger and your iPhone.

However, I would strongly suggest against even trying, as placing the battery case between the wireless charger and the wireless charging point on your iPhone sounds very much like a recipe for something bad to happen.

Find another case or stick with wired charging.

I think you can’t charge with this case. Maybe you can check if it supports wireless charging.
