hi their, My friend edward alonzo has updated his imac to mac os high sierra, and the problem is, when he logs in to his desktop, voiceover is on, but he gets no speech. it lets him log in just fine with voiceover speaking to let him type in his password, but no speech after he does this. voiceover is on, because he gets sounds, and he did confirm with an aira agent this morning that he was in deed logged in, and this has been happening sense last night. we're completly baffled by this one.

Have your friend turn VoiceOver off, then back on once he knows he's logged in. Also, what year is his computer and also what voice for VoiceOver is he using?

hi, he's done that several times, and the mac is a 2015 imac running alex as the voice.

hi sometimes right after updated shows in the window something related to iCloud but I don't think is the case, I though about voiceOver mute it for some accident however I don't think as well. the last thing is some unknown issue when the speech gone and require redownload the voices I seen this issue few times, I don't know if you friend has some vision or has some sighted assistance but give a try redownload the voices.
or might you should guide how to do the process starting from voiceOver utility .hope this help.
