Do Blind People Need a Mood-Recognition App? I Think Not

Posted on Friday, August 10, 2012 by Michael Hansen

Interpreting peoples’ body language—particularly facial expressions—is one of those challenges that almost all blind people face. But soon, there will be an app for that.

Yes, you read correctly. Canada’s Metro News reported yesterday that a group of engineering students at the University of Windsor are developing an iPhone app that can recognize peoples…

AppleVis 2012 Summer Olympic Games (Event #1)

Posted on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 by AnonyMouse
So as I am sitting here listening to the Olympic Games on my television. I thought to myself. Hey, let's do an Olympic Games of our own! Who knows? Maybe it would be fun or not so fun. That will be up to you! If it turns out to be successful and people like this then I will post a different event throughout the Summer Olympics! So what we are looking for are three nominees that will get the Gold, Silver and the Bronze award just like the winners get in the Olympic games. Instead of sports…

Syntellia offering Fleksy to developers for integration into third-party applications

Posted on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 by Amir Soleimani

Fleksy is getting better on an almost daily basis as its betas reach testers. It's pushed my bluetooth keyboard to the sidelines and while it would be better if we could bring it up in each and every application instantly instead of typing in a separate application (if Apple had allowed it), that might not be quite far-off. Syntellia has made Fleksy's SDK available to developers, meaning they can integrate it into their…

iOS 6 announced at WWDC 2012

Posted on Monday, June 11, 2012 by Scott Davert
iOS 6 announcements note: I did miss a few things because the audio was a bit difficult, so anyone who has the remaining info is welcome to post it. Siri can now launch apps. Also, more support for other languages and countries. There are also more local search type options, including those outside the US. Facebook integration. Facebook and Twitter are now options in the Notification Center, and App Store gets Facebook integration so you can tell apps that your friends like. Also, do not…

Siri's oddities humorously revealed

Posted on Monday, May 21, 2012 by Amir Soleimani

I'm not sure if you listen to Harry Shearer's interesting weekend program Le Show, but his May 20th show is much more interesting as he uses Siri several times during the 1-hour program to remind us all of the weaknesses of artificial intelligence. The show starts with a humorous conversation between Harry and Siri. and Siri also shows up a few more times throughout the program, but her final appearance in the form of a conversation with "…

When access reaches the mainstream: Interesting article about iPhone accessibility

Posted on Thursday, May 3, 2012 by Amir Soleimani

As I finished reading How the Blind Are Reinventing the iPhone in The Atlantic, I couldn't resist sharing it with you. I'm pleased to see that Apple's access-oriented efforts are deservedly being brought into the limelight. It'll also help developers become fully aware of access issues and the infrastructure which is available to them if they wish to work…

iOS or Android for the visually impaired: nine reasons that count

Posted on Sunday, March 11, 2012 by Amir Soleimani

When it comes to choosing a new handset, I can become as meticulous and picky as hell! It’s not necessarily a vice; however, if it takes more than three months to make your final decision, it can no longer be called a “virtue” either.

Having used several Symbian handsets such as the 6630, N73, N82, N86, and X7, I finally decided to kiss goodbye to Symbian about four months ago. My phones were sort of decrepit and I needed something new. Having had heard many good points about Android…

Sometimes, sending emails to developers does work

Posted on Sunday, March 11, 2012 by Scott Davert
When I originally set out to write my blog entry on the accessibility of the top free news apps, I had started to review the top 5. And although I did test all 5, since I was writing a blog post and not a novel, I decided to simply use the top 3 for my review. One of the 2 apps that was not included in my review was the USA Today app. The accessibility issues in the previous version consisted mainly of the fact that you could not read the titles of articles in the app, much like the Fox News…

Apple set to remove Home button from iPhone 5 and iPad 2

Posted on Thursday, January 13, 2011 by David Goodwin

The introduction of multitouch gestures in the new iOS 4.3 will coincide with the removal of the only physical button present on the front of the iPad and the iPhone, sources close to the matter have told BGR.

The site adds that the iPad will be the first to lose the button and that the iPhone will be the next on the list; it is likely that the iPod Touch will follow suit.

Instead, multitouch gestures will be used to access the home screen and to launch the app switcher. It is…
