Getting Started with the macOS Finder

Posted on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 by mehgcap

The Finder

Finder is the Mac's file browser. With it, you can look at files and folders on internal, external, and network drives; copy, cut, and paste items; tag files for easier locating later; search for files; and more. The problem is that, particularly for those transitioning to the Mac from Windows, Finder is a confusing mess that makes you scared to even go looking for a file. I understand that, because I was there too. Hopefully, in writing down what I've learned over the…

An Overview of Five iOS Text Editors

Posted on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 by Craig Werner

Note October 17, 2016: a new and updated guide on iOS text editors is now available here.

Introduction

iPhone and iPad users have a bewildering abundance of plain text editors from which to choose. For projects not requiring complex formatting, there's really no need to bother with a word processor. Devotees of minimalism will revel in the files these…

Assigning hotkeys to styles in Pages for Mac

Posted on Sunday, January 26, 2014 by Piotr Machacz

Introduction

iWork 13 was a big update. One that excited blind people, and at the same time annoyed power users. Because the iWork apps were rewritten from scratch, not every feature was included at first. One of these features is assigning hotkeys to styles, which later was brought back in an update. A couple times I’ve seen people asking how it works, so I sat down to figure it out.

How it’s done?

  • Open up pages
  • Create a new document
  • Jump…

Tagging Files in macOS

Posted on Friday, January 24, 2014 by mehgcap

What Are Tags?

Starting in macOS 10.9 Mavericks, files could be given one or more "tags", to help users keep things organized. A tag is simply a text label you can assign to a file, letting you organize your files with categories instead of, or in addition to, folders. For example, a student might have a science folder, holding a textbook, handouts, tests, notes, assignments, research papers, and more. What if a quiz deals with thermodynamics, as do some files of notes and a paper…

Speed Up Using Your Mac With Keyboard Commander

Posted on Thursday, November 21, 2013 by blindgator
As VoiceOver users on the Mac, we all love short cuts. They make our life and computer experience easier. Most of us are familiar with the basics, when in mail Command N for a new message, and Command Shift D to send that message. We have to learn all of these keyboard commands to use our Macs. I am here to tell you that once you have gotten comfortable using your Mac, there are even more ways to speed up performance. Today I want to discuss Keyboard Commander. Some of you are very familiar…

Securing Private Data On Your Mac Using An Encrypted Disk Image

Posted on Sunday, November 17, 2013 by Joey G

Though I’m not always the best writer, I do enjoy writing down my thoughts from time to time. There’s just one problem with that. It’s not secure.

Sure, there are all kinds of apps for the mac and your I device that allow you to journal. However, most of the apps I have seen are only somewhat usable, or just way too fancy for what I want to do. I played with the MacJournal app for the mac a few months ago, but I was not impressed. It would always crash on me while I was writing, and…

Increasing Responsiveness of Voiceover on a Mac

Posted on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 by Special K
The other day, a few folks and I were comparing stories about switching to a Mac, and trying to build a case for some others to switch as well. The greatest complaint that evening was how Voiceover is less responsive than a screen reader in Windows. This got me to thinking of what the differences were, and through experimentation, have figured out a few tips to make Voiceover as responsive as you want it to be. At this point, I dare to say my Voiceover is just as responsive as the leading…

Importing BRF files to the BARD Mobile app using Dropbox

Posted on Thursday, October 3, 2013 by Scott Davert

To complete this process, you must have agreed to the BARD Service agreement, and be signed in to a BARD account. This will not work for people who do not have accounts with the national Library Service for the Blind and Physically handicapped . For more info on whether you qualify, and to apply if you do, see the BARD Main Page

Note that the only reasons you would have needed to sign in is because the app will not work until you have done so. This…

Saving Streaming Station Link To Home Screen

Posted on Tuesday, July 9, 2013 by Deborah Armstrong
You can navigate through a web page with links to streaming audio. ACB Radio comes to mind. But when you stream the audio, you find no way to save the URL of the stream as a shortcut icon on your home screen. Not to worry, you can bookmark Audio stream URLS too. Simply locate the link as usual. But instead of double-tapping to activate it, double-tap and hold. Wait for a second and an "action" menu will slide in to view. The URL target of the selected link will be read prefixed by the…

How to use the Mac mini without a screen

Posted on Sunday, March 17, 2013 by Thomas Byskov Dalgaard

This tip is intended for those who either have, or are considering buying a Mac Mini since it does not take up much space and don't wish to use a screen because you're a Voiceover user who don't need a screen. I have created this tip because Apple's support article does not (yet) explain a solution that works. However, I know that they are going to investigate this issue.

Can you use a MacMini without a screen?
Yes, you can. However, if you do not perform the…

An Explanation of the Status Cell Option in Voiceover on iOS

Posted on Sunday, February 3, 2013 by mehgcap

Enabling the Status Cell

If you have ever paired a braille display with your iOS device, you have seen that option that appears above the display name in braille settings: "Status Cell". You may, like me, have double tapped it, decided if you wanted it on the left or the right, then gone about your business, keeping a finger on that mysterious cell to see what it might do. You may have, like me, used it for a while and finally given up on it, having no idea what it was for or how…

How to Access AutoCorrect Suggestions in iOS When Using a Bluetooth Keyboard

Posted on Saturday, December 1, 2012 by billip

I believe that I have figured out how to get an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to autocorrect with a bluetooth keyboard connected.

First, make sure that you have QuickNav turned off.

If you are not sure how to do this, just press the right and left arrows together on your keyboard.

Then, try this:

When VoiceOver tells you a word is misspelled, hit the Backspace key once.

Now a suggestions list pops up, but I doubt VoiceOver will tell you…

Obtaining the iTunes store link to an app

Posted on Thursday, November 29, 2012 by Deborah Armstrong
In the AppleVis help section, there's a topic which describes how to obtain a link to an app in the iTunes store. I have a more simple procedure which will also help you search for interesting apps. In to google, type the information you are seeking, for example "SIP client iPhone" or "app compatible voiceover" or "text adventure iPhone" Don't include the quotes unless you want to match an exact phrase. After that, type iTunes, and submit your search. You can then copy the link from your…

Learn How To Visualise iOS Apps.

Posted on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 by Kara Louise

In this guide, I'm going to explain how you can visualise the layout of iOS apps using voiceOver, or VO for short. even though you may be totally blind. This can be done quite easily, even without using a ScreenDots protector, or relying on a bluetooth keyboard for navigation purposes.

I understand that everyone is different, so if you do find these accessories essential, then by all means continue to use them. However, if you master the below techniques, I believe you'll be…

How to Hear the Time Every Minute

Posted on Friday, November 23, 2012 by Jessica Brown
If you want a quick way to time something and you do not care about it being perfectly accurate but you do not want to have to go in to the clock app and set a timer, alarm or stopwatch, just single finger single tap on or swipe to the part of the statice bar that says the time. VoiceOver will say the time every minute. Note that because the iOS clock does not do seconds, when you first start timing, you will not know what second of the minute you are starting timing at, but after that you will…

Adding Keyboard Shortcuts to Mac Apps

Posted on Friday, October 19, 2012 by mehgcap

What Is This?

Is there an application on your Mac whose menu items are lacking keyboard shortcuts? For instance, would it not be easier to add a shortcut to mail for the Save Attachments item, or to iTunes to sync your iOS device, or to Safari to quickly tweet a page? Well, you can do all this, and you need nothing more than a few minutes and System Preferences.

Cool! How Do I Do It?

  • Open the application to which you want to add a shortcut. Go to the menu…
