Smart Home Tech and Gadgets
Hello,
Currently I have Protect America as my home alarm monitoring service but their app is not accessable and trying to get them to understand is all but impossible. So my contract is about to expire and I will be looking for a new provider. So does anyone out there have any recommendations? Is the app provided accessable? I have a GE Simon XT GSM so it should work with most monitoring services but if I need to get new equipment, that’s fine too.
In our house we have a wall clock which also shows the current indoor and outdoor temperatures on the LCD display. We often look at it to decide in the summertime whether or not to open the windows and turn on the attic fan to cool down the house. Unfortunately, as my vision has gotten worse, I can no longer make out what is on the display, and I haven’t found any apps that can successfully read the display for me (neither Seeing AI nor Envision AI will do it). So, for now I have to rely on sighted assistance if I want to know what the current temperature is.
Hello, everyone. I am seeking some input about slow cookers and IOS apps used to control them. I've read some info about the instant pot line. Is that the best for accessibility? I recall a poster saying that sighted assistance was needed for initial setup. Is this still true, or can you use something like Be my Eyes to accomplish this? I am buying this as a special valentine's day gift, for someone who has little to no vision. Thanks for any input, anyone can provide.
I have so many questions about Smart devices and how it all works. So I was hoping that creating a jumbo thread could bring all of the answers together in one place!
First things first, which hub seems to work the best?
What are the differences between Apple, Google, and the Amazon smart home hubs? I am leaning towards Amazon Alexa because there are so many fun things to add and play around with, but is it as accessible?
Hi all,
I'm looking for a Smart Plug, accessible from an iPhone, which I can control using VoiceOver, and which also allows me to retrieve data about the power drawn from the plug. This is mainly to determine the power consumption of devices such as washing machines, tumble dryers, electric cookers, (including slow cookers and air fryers), etc.
Many thanks for any info,
Tim Pennick
I've been seriously thinking about buying a smart scale, both for the extra data it can store and for autonomy, as I wouldn't need any sighted help to know the metrics.
But how accessible are them, both the device itself and it's respective app / other app I can use to track it's data? Xiaomi and Onron called my attention for their prices, but I have no idea how their apps actually perform with the smart scale.
Which is the best smart scale to get which can connect to your iPhone by wifi or bluetooth? I've not seen any posts about this for a couple of years. Ideally I'd like one that can work with the Fitbit app, though I understand Fitbit's layouts less these days: so I'd be happy if it worked with Apple's Health app at least. I want to measure body fat as part of a bit of a weight loss drive and my confidence in products is low as each one seems to have its quirks or inaccessible bits. Also, is expensive better with this type of product?
Hi everyone,
I am looking in to a smart Thermostat for my home and am in between 2 of them and would like some suggestions from a usability side of things. Either the Nest 3rd Generation or the ecobee3. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
I am considering replacing the thermostats in my house with smart thermostats. Does anyone here have any experience with this and do you know which ones have companion iPhone apps that are Voice Over friendly?
hello. Has anyone in here used a Sole F80 folding treadmill? And or the application? The app seems to be at least mostly accessible. I don't want to buy the treadmill which is pretty expensive without knowing that other blind people have been able to use it and sync it properly with the application. Also, if you know of any other treadmills that sync with iOS applications please let me know. I considered a pro-form which can sync with iFit Coach software, but I said cost $15 a month which is way too expensive in my opinion. thanks a lot in advance.
I just got an alexa skill called my pod.
It has a website which allows you to add in links to have your alexa stream the audio from them.
It is fully featured.
https://mypodapp.com/
I just need a few cool audio streaming links to test.
I already got one from audiogames.net for the text spaced radio.
It worked well.
Thanks for anything.
If you are in the market for an A/V Stereo receiver upgrade, the Str-AN1000 may be the choice you’ve been looking for! If you are blind, the Sony Music Center iOS app makes using this receiver an accessible experience, From locating a source, to switching Zones, to adjusting the volume and other minor settings after setup. You don’t need to touch the front panel of the receiver!
Some highlights from the products Amazon page:
7.2-channel A/V Receiver (165 W 6 ohms, 1 kHz, 1ch THD 0.9%). Power Requirement : 120V 60Hz. Power Consumption: 240W.
Starting on December 25. No matter what I try. My Amazon echo speakers will not play any playlists that I have made. And no playlists that are made by other users.
However, it does play Spotify original playlist.
If I try saying, shuffle my ultimate music playlist, she will say, here is Indie hits. Or here is ultimate boy bands. These are all Spotify generated playlists. And nothing remotely to what I asked for.
Hi Everyone,
I wondered if you had any suggestions for blind friendly cooking thermometers.
I know that places like LS&S, and Independent Living Aids offer talking thermometers, but I'm looking for one I can pair to my phone to monitor meats that I may be cooking whether in the oven, smoker, or the grill.
IF it's able to have an alarm for when meats hit the specified temperature that's great.
Thanks in advance.
Chuck
As amazon are poised to bring out yet another base kindle, I'm wondering what your experience is using it with Voice View, which is their screen reader? I'm looking for a device for just reading, audible books and kindle and the ability to buy books in app, which you can't do on any device aside from a kindle.
I understand from the manufacturer that they have several blind users in the UK who are using this device and associated app with VoiceOver. I'm just wondering how accessible the app is with VoiceOver and what data I can read and settings that I can manage within the app.
Thanks for sharing any experiences with the app.

To everyone who uses ring products, what is your thought on the new ring alarm system coming out? Since it is not out yet of course we don't know how accessible it is, what I do know is that it does have a keypad which I don't know if you can control it from the app or not. I thought about preordering it for the $199.00 price but think I will wait to hear how accessible the hardware is before making my final decision because I'm sure someone out there will try it and give their feedback to us.
