Mac

Hi all,

Would anybody happen to know whether there's a setting I can adjust to change the way Voiceover handles repeated symbols and characters? For instance, typing *** at the moment gives a readout as "star star star", but it would be nice if this could be spoken as "3 stars" instead.

I have used Salesforce with windows, but I was wondering about peoples experiences with Salesforce on a Mac using VoiceOver? How well does it work, and what do you have issues with?

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Edit: I started this thread focused on text scrolling, but I think that we need to have this dedicated hub to centralized any false positive and positive complaints to apple concerning this once and for all, and write any tip or trick we each might have for text handling with voiceover on the mac, as complaints about this topic are spread out in lots of random macos topics. Plus how mac text navigation works is very different from that of windows especially from a screen reader perspective...

Hi all,
Well, VoiceOver has failed me this time. I am doing much reading these days and my Word books are ok with VoiceOver, still wehnever it is large VoiceOver keeps acting up: moving from the headers to footers then to body text is miserable. VO becomes sluggish and to go back to where I had stopped is an issue itself. I have reinstalled OSX and rechecked Pages. it is the same, no change. Is this the case with VO in word processing on Mac? Are there any hints to improve it? Thanks

Hello there,

I have downloaded the latest version of Java on my machine that runs Mac OS X 10.14.6, which is the most recent as of writing. However when I attempt to launch the installer, I encounter a window that I cannot do anything with. Are there any recommendations to install Java with the aid of VoiceOver?
Thanks.

Hi,

I’ve just upgraded to OSX Ventura on my new MacBook pro.
To get Voiceover started at the log in window, I accessed system prefs, lock screen, accessibility and clicked the button that says turn VO on at the login screen.
However this only seems to happen for one log in. After that the setting is lost so I have to press cmdf5 or cmd and triple click the touch ID key.
Is this a bug or is there another way to enable turn on at the log on prompt that works permanently?

Kind regards

Graham

Hi, when I use the up or down arrow keys in Word, voiceover is reading the entire document. The same thing happens when I press Vo+l. The up and down arrows should only read one line at a time. The voiceover cursor seems to be stuck.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated before I uninstall and reinstall Word. This is not a compatibility issue because the program works fine on another computer that is running the same program and mac os. I have already reinstalled the mac os, so it seems to be a setting somewhere in Word.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Hi folks,

I’ve been experimenting with the writing tools feature on Mac. When I select some text and have the AI write it in a professional, friendly, or concise way; it does the job. But I can’t see the written text by using VoiceOver navigation commands; I always have to click on Done, then that’s when I can read what the Apple Intelligence actually changed. Same goes for the proofread option as well. Any workarounds? Is it another accessibility issue Apple has yet to fix?

How do you set up a Mac to run Voiceover at the login prompt when the system boots up? I thought it was under system preferences and accounts, but I'm not seeing any settings related to Voiceover. I've gone into the accessibility dialogue and made sure that Voiceover is enabled, as another post asking the same question suggests, but that doesn't do the trick. Any help is appreciated.

Hello community members,
I know I just asked a question not too long ago about automatically starting VoiceOver on startup. While I solved my problem, i am trying to help a friend do the same. This person however, uses file vault. Can auto starting voiceover on startup still be accomplished?
Thanks again,
Alyssa

I've been the proud owner of a Mac since June and am mostly happy with it accept for one huge problem. I find when I'm navigating through anything with VO left and right arrow keys, after a while VoiceOver will stop reading certain elements. I might navigate through some elements on a page and some of them will be spoken while some will just be met with the VoiceOver clunk sound that you get when you navigate but no speach telling me what it is. At this point, the only thing to fix this is to disable and enable VoiceOver.

Hi everyone I have this issue with Skype and Voiceover I was wondering why the person on the other end of the call can hear Voiceover I don't want this to happen so is there a way to stop it happening? I should elaborate slightly I know if you are using the normal speakers then it will be heard but I mean it is still being heard even with earphones on, any help would be welcome.

Hi there!
I have a problem, and I would be very grateful if anyone could help me solve it.
When I record a sound or video recording on QuickTime, Voiceover can be heard in the recording. When I listen to the recording, I can hear Voiceover and my own voice simultaneously.
The problem is the same with Skype. The person on the other end can hear Voiceover speaking if I navigate on my Mac while speaking.
My friend is using a dialer-app at work, and the same problem occurs there.

Using OSX Catalina and my 2017 Macbook. Audio from a YouTube or facebook video will stop playing even though the video continues playing. Turning off VO during the video does not help. However if I turn off VO and reload the page the audio sounds just fine. Does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I've just acquired a Silicon Mac running Sequoia 15.3. I've noticed some strange things about quick nav and VoiceOver when using Safari (SNR hasn't manifested ... yet.) For example, when browsing a webpage with quick nav enabled, VoiceOver will, for no reason I currently understand, appear to turn quick nav off, even though toggling the feature reveals that it is, in fact, still on. Bug or feature? Other than that, I'm quite enjoying my new Mac (did you know you can play the iPad version of KODP on a Silicon Mac? Also Six Ages, Ride like the wind.)

Hey all,
So when I leave the Mail app open on my Mac, every time a new email comes into my mailbox, VoiceOver insists on reading the whole damned thing automatically. I have to actively stop it.
If using the Mac at the time it's not the end of the world, but if it's just sitting on the coffee table while I'm doing something else, it's incredibly annoying.
Is there any way to stop this behaviour, and have it only make a sound to indicate a new message, without the speech?

Hi. Wondering if anyone can help me out, as a new user of the Mac. I've configured Voiceover on my Mac book air to come on automatically at the log-in screen, but simply checking the Voiceover option within accessibility of users and groups hasn't done the job. I read somewhere that turning off file vault (the disk encryption) would fix the problem. Has anyone else found this to be true? Bearing in mind the crucial role file vault plays in computer security, surely this needs to be left on?

HI,
