Mac

Here's another thing I've noticed in Sierra that I'm not sure is specific to my mac or not. In El Capitan in the notes field of the more info section in reminders, you could type text, but voiceover wouldn't read it so you were unable to also edit it. They have fixed that in Sierra, but it seems they've done the same thing to the web content for conversations in Messages now. You can read with VO-right or left arrow, but you can't read by character or word.

Hello folks, my elderly blind friend is having trouble with his writing in both Text Edit and email. He says the cursor is to the left of the period/fullstop and commas in both programs. I've looked at his Voiceover Utility options in both Navigation and Verbosity but can't figure out why it's changed. Is there an accidental keyboard shortcut he could have made that changed this? Any ideas how to get and keep the cursor to the end of what he's writing?

I have a Custom Punctuation setup called Coding. I also have a Coding Activity which automatically gets switched to for various apps like PyCharm, VS Code etc.

However, I've noticed for a while that punctuation isn't being read out when a line is selected. I put this down to my error but couldn't spot anything wrong. But then the other day it randomly started to work again. And it was good for a little while, but now it's stopped again. For seemingly no reason as I'm pretty sure I've not changed anything.

The latest version comes with one new feature - you can assign a custom keyboard shortcut to any voice from the context menu in the Voices list.

After that you can change voices directly from the player with those shortcuts. It works seamless even if voices are from different engines, everything will change on the fly.

The only catch is that you should try to make the keyboard shortcut that is not in the conflict with existing shortcuts - nothing bad will happen if you do just the shortcut in that case may call the current command and not the voice.

Hi all,
I have been a Mac user for around 4 months now, so am still quite new to the whole thing. forgive me if this question therefore comes across as ill-informed.

I'm trying to add a custom punctuation group. I'd prefer it to be modeled after the default "Some" group, with a few additions, like speaking dashes, braces, and colons. The problem is, those entries are already present and I can't seem to modify any of them (Voice Over insists the popup buttons are dimmed). And I really don't want to have to totally reinvent the wheel and create a group from scratch. Is there some way to create a group based off of the built-in groups and then edit the entries inherited from that group?
Thanks in advance.

I wanted to reorder status menu items such ass battery, Wi-Fi, and Spotlight search by using the VoiceOver drag and drop; or locking the mouse and trying to drag that way; but I couldn't. What I found out is that sighted people drag those when holding the Command button. What is an accessible way for us to do it, or is it, well, inaccessible?

Hi folks,

I've been trying to customize my finder's and Safari's toolbar by selecting the customize toolbar option in the view menu. However, I can't seem to find any accessible way doing that as all the items appear as images and not checkboxes or anything. I have tried using drag and drop, using the mouse lock function to rearrange items, and anything else I could think of but couldn't make it work. Any suggestions or insights?

Hi,

I must be missing something obvious because I'm not having success trying to customize the gestures for VoiceOver in the Trackpad Commander. I have chosen a modifier key, navigated in the table, selected a trackpad gesture and moved to the menu button for that gesture. I pick the command I want from the resulting choices but that selection never sticks. I've tried both pressing enter on the command and activating.

This is happening for me with Big Sur 11.2 on multiple computers.

Any hints are appreciated.

Hello all,
I have a quick question about the cyberduck ftp client. Once I am connected to my server, how do I see the files in a particular folder? I can see the table of folders on my server but I can't open the folder to see the files inside. For example I select my public_html folder but I can't see the contents inside. Also is there another client that is either free or low cost that I can try?

Thanks,
Greg Wocher

hi all, I had a bunch of DAISY format books that I wanted to convert to m4B files for use with Apple Books and other standard audiobook players. I couldn't find anything that would do it with automatic metadata lookup, cover art download and the ability to skip intro and title pages, so I've written a little app for MacOS and iOs. It facilitates converting all DAISY book formats to M4V, single MP3 files with chapters or split MP3 / M4A / AAC / AIFF files.

Hi,
Is there an app that will let me create a daisy book from an mp3 audiobook on the mac?
Thanks,
Moop

Hi all, Besides ReadHear for the Mac, wondering if anyone else has come across any other daisy players for the Mac which can do both text and audio formats? I know we have Olearia which is free, but it only does daisy audio. ReadHear is great, but for some folks it is a bit out of their price range. David

Hello everyone,
Is there a Daisy reader for the mac that would allow me to read Daisy books I purchase from places like National Braille Press? I am wanting to use daisy because it makes things a bit easier to navigate. I am looking at possibly purchasing Everything you need to know to use the mac with el capitan and voiceover from NBP.

Does anyone know if there is an email client for OSX Catalina that can render email (plain text and HTML) in a dark mode? (And allow me to compose in dark mode too).

I've used Thunderbird, Spark and Apple Mail and none of them appear to do this. For web browsing, I can use extensions like Dark Reader, Dark Text and Light Background or even experimental Chrome dark mode, but for emails I always have to put up with glaring white emails. Particularly HTML.

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knows of an accessible data base software for the Mac?
I've been using Microsoft Access for a few months but I wondered if there's something similar to Access for the Mac that works reasonably well or is fully accessible with VoiceOver?

Hi! I am looking for some database software for the mac that works with VoiceOver. I know there's filemaker pro out there for $500 but not sure how accessible it is. I have used MS Access in the past to do database design but have switched totally to the mac. Does anybody have any recommendations or info? Thanks, Jim

I was trying to open a new tab on Safari earlier today and I accidentally hit option t instead of command t. My mac then read the time and date to me. I know for a long time this was broken in previous versions of Mac OS. I did an update a couple of days ago and that seems to have fixed the VoiceOver date and time script with option t command. Hopefully this works for others that have updated to the latest Mac OS.

Hi all.

I see Dawncaster has come to Mac, woo!

ANybody tried it? Is it accessible? I assume so since it would be weird to make it accessible on iOS and nowhere else. But I thought I'd ask before I hand over some money. I really hope so, I love the hell out of the game.
